2024 Sprunt Lectures May 6-8
UPSem is excited to welcome these fabulous speakers for the annual Sprunt lectures May 6-8, 2024, held on the Richmond campus of Union Presbyterian Seminary:
Dr. John J. Thatamanil, professor of theology and world religions at Union Theological Seminary in New York, is the keynote lecturer. His topic is Desiring Truth: The Quest for Interreligious Wisdom in a Post Truth Era. Dr. Thatamanil is committed to comparative theology that asks how religious diversity can be a promise rather than a problem. An accomplished teacher and preacher, Dr. Thatamanil has published editorials in The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. His opening lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024 in Watts Chapel.
Our worship leader will be Rev. Dr. M. Craig Barnes, former president of Princeton Theological Seminary. Focusing on how to help pastors be pastors, Dr. Barnes will provide insights on pastoral identity.
On Tuesday, May 7, the Alumni luncheon will feature Rev. Lori Raible one of the first alumni of UPSem’s Charlotte campus, where she earned her M.Div in 2006. A second term member of the school’s Board of Trustees, Rev. Raible is continuing research in gender, organizational theory, and the church.
The Black Alumni Association will recognize Rev. Dr. Leonard L. Edloe as the Trailblazer of the Year, past president of the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and a UPSem alum.
The Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, Advocacy Director of the Ministry at the United Nations for the Presbyterian Church (USA) and Director of the Washington Office of Public Witness, has been selected as UPSem’s 2024 Distinguished Alum.
Please join us to hear these perspectives on social change in today’s church during the Sprunt Lectures.
A special event, the Inauguration of Dr. Jacqueline E. Lapsley as Union Presbyterian Seminary’s Eighth President, will occur on the afternoon of May 8 after the conclusion of the 2024 Sprunt Lectures.
