2019 Sprunt Lectures

Our 2019 Sprunt Lecturer this year is Dr. John J. Collins, Holmes Professor of Old Testament at Yale Divinity School, who will speak on the theme: What Are Biblical Values? addressing topics and some biblical understandings on right to life, gender, the environment, and social justice.
“The problem,” Dr. Collins explains, “is that when it comes to a host of social and political issues, the Bible has much less to say than is generally supposed.”
The opening lecture on Monday night, May 6, 6:00 p.m. in Watts Chapel is entitled “Does the Bible Affirm a Right to Life?” Also in Watts Chapel, Tuesday, May 7, at 9:00 a.m. is “The Bible and Gender” and at 6:00 p.m. “The Bible and the Environment.” Wednesday morning’s lecture with a Q&A is at 9:00 a.m. in Lake Chapel in the Early Center and entitled, “Social Justice in the Shadow of the Apocalypse.”
The invited preacher for Sprunts is Dr. Lance Watson (M.A. ’86), senior pastor of the Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, Richmond. Leading worship with Dr. Watson is the Rev. Anna George Traynham (M.Div. ’14), associate pastor, Central Presbyterian, Atlanta.
Rev. Dr. Harry Eugene Simmons (M.A.’84) and Rev. Dr. Dean K. Thompson (B.D.’69; Th.M.’70; Ph.D.’74) will be honored at the Trailblazer/Distinguished Alumni Award Reception in Lake Chapel at 10:15 a.m. on May 7. Speaking at the Alumni Luncheon is Dr. Lewis Galloway (D.Min. ’77; Th.M. ’79). His topic: “In Such a Time as This.”
