(Elective Course) Womanist Preaching
Course Instructor: Dr. Jennifer L. Carner
Course Dates:
January 14, 2025 – February 18, 2025
Course Description:
This course begins with the assumption that “African American preaching can spark a Christian Renaissance.” (Dr . Frank A. Thomas)
To quote Dr. Courtney V. Buggs, “Debates about gender and preaching are often rooted in tradition and scripture interpretation.” Amid voices and systems designed to silence African American women preachers in the nineteenth century, these brave women decided to preach anyway, anyhow. In light of this rich history of African American female proclaimers, this course will survey African American women’s history in preaching and the struggle for the right to preach. Students will explore the methods by which African American women exercised their agency and established their authority through their preaching practice. Additionally, learners will attend to rhetorical analysis of selected sermons.
This course explores how, historically and contemporaneously, African American women have engaged in preaching. It uses womanist frameworks and scholarship to examine the preaching practices of African American women. It emphasizes the practice of preaching as an embodied performance of theological convictions.
