Online Workshop: The New Testament and Contemporary Social Concerns — Post-election Perspectives
Dates: Tuesdays, February 2 and February 9, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. EST (Note: This online workshop is a two-part series).
Led by: John Carroll, Harriet Robertson Fitts Memorial Professor of New Testament, Union Presbyterian Seminary
Workshop Description: Karl Barth famously advocated reading the newspaper alongside the Bible. In a time of great social upheaval such as ours, how do we faithfully and responsibly bring the teaching of the New Testament to bear on pressing contemporary issues? Whether the topic of the day is racism, immigration, poverty, prison reform, gender identity and inclusion, or environmental devastation, one may expect taking a principled stand will place a preacher or other Christian leader in the midst of the proverbial hornet’s nest. Where does the New Testament point us as people of faith? How shall we speak faithfully and smartly to the issues that confront us? This online workshop will enable participants to explore these sorts of questions with post-election perspectives. Participants may also make suggestions for topics or texts.
Note: This workshop is a re-boot from the similar and popular offering in October 2020, led by Dr. Carroll. This workshop is intended for those participants who were unable to attend the initial workshop held in October 2020.

Participants will need an electronic device equipped with a reliable Internet connection, built-in or external microphone, and a built-in or external webcam.
