This is an online course that is open to all. This 6-week course includes weekly online class meetings, on Thursday evenings, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. EST. In addition to the live class meetings, this course will include both reading and written assignments.

Online Course Title: Introduction to Pastoral Care, Pathways Online Course

Led by: Dr. Rubén Arjona, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care, Union Presbyterian Seminary

Course Description: An introduction to the theories of pastoral care and counseling. The course offers various theological and psychological perspectives and tools to help participants develop confidence in responding to circumstances of pastoral care and counseling in the context of parish ministry and other institutional settings. Topics include the art of listening, loss and grief, pastoral care with couples and families, and the pastoral function of worship and the sacraments.

Online Course Format:  Weekly class meetings via Zoom Technology, along with assignments posted on Blackboard, the seminary’s learning management system (login credentials provided)

Dates: Thursdays, February 23 – March 30, 2023, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time

Cost:  $150, if register by February 8, 2023. (Note: Beginning February 9, price increases by $25).

CEUs:  3.0

The Pathways Online Course Program offers ten courses to provide educational preparation toward leading a congregation as a Commissioned Ruling Elder (CRE) over a two-year period .  Courses are open to all, and one does not need to be pursuing to become a CRE in order to participate. Courses aim to enhance knowledge and practical application to various ministry contexts.
