Workshop Title: Play, On Purpose

Led by: Dr. Lakisha Lockhart, Assistant Professor of Christian Education, Union Presbyterian Seminary

Leader Bio:

Lakisha R. Lockhart’s research interests are in the areas of religious education; practical, liberation, and Womanist theologies; ethics and society; multiple intelligences; embodied faith and pedagogies; theological aesthetics’ theopoetics; creativity, imagination, and play. Her teaching takes seriously the benefits and necessity of play, movement, aesthetics, creative arts, and embodiment. For Lockhart, the body is a locus for doing theology and theological reflection.

Ordained to ministry in the non-denominational tradition, she recognizes the importance of teaching Christian education for the strengthening of the church. Because she recognizes that theological education is grounded in both academic and ecclesial contexts, her students are assigned to participate in their congregations and communities as a part of their educational experience. Her focus on practical pedagogy is not only to develop more committed and knowledgeable educators and ministers, but also more committed and knowledgeable congregants.

Workshop Description:

In this interactive workshop participants will not only learn about the theological, spiritual, and neurological dimensions and benefits of play, but they will also engage in various play practices. Participants will have fun, dig deeper into play, and even leave with additional play practices to use and apply to their own settings. This workshop is open to current church leaders and educators, as well as lay leaders and volunteers, seeking to integrate the practice of play into their own context of ministry. Whether you come alone or in a group, you will experience creative, meaningful ways to play. We hope you will come open and ready to learn about and embody what can occur when we Play, on Purpose.

Cost (includes lunch):

$25 per person

Meals: Lunch is included. When you register you will be asked to indicate any food preferences (gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, etc.).

CEUs: .5 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for this event. Note: CEU certificates can be generated upon request at the time of the event.

Campus Housing: 

Housing on campus is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  You can sign up for housing, for an additional cost, when you register.
