Online Course Title:  Biblical Interpretation

This online course is open to all. The Biblical Interpretation course is a part of the seminary’s Pathways online course program, and this same course has also been approved for those seeking to become a Certified Christian Educator.

This 8-week course includes bi-weekly online class meetings, on Thursday evenings, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. EST. In addition to the four live class meetings, this course includes both reading and written assignments.

Led by: Dr. John Carroll, Professor of New Testament, Union Presbyterian Seminary

Course Description: This course has as its primary goal the equipping of Christian leaders to interpret biblical texts faithfully. The course provides an overview of the ways in which the church has approached the work of biblical interpretation and then offers a practical guide for close reading of passages, featuring peer discussion of the meaning and message of selected biblical texts. In a final course project, students write a paper in which they present their exegesis (interpretation) of a biblical passage.

Persons seeking certification as Christian educators in the Presbyterian Church (USA) also prepare a presentation in which they draw from the fruits of their exegetical study for a teaching-and-learning event.

The course is designed to meet the educational goals and expectations of persons seeking certification as lay leaders in congregations or as Christian educators, as well as persons with general interest in enhancing their ability to interpret Scripture.

Online Course Format:  Bi-weekly class meetings via Zoom Technology, along with assignments posted on Blackboard, the seminary’s learning management system (login credentials provided).

Dates: August 29 – October 20, 2022

Synchronous class meetings meet bi-weekly on Thursdays September 8, September 22, October 6, and October 20, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time

Asynchronous class work and discussion through Blackboard on alternating weeks

Cost:  $150, if register by August 14. (Note: Beginning August 15, price increases by $25).

CEUs:  3.0

The Pathways Online Course Program offers ten courses to provide educational preparation toward leading a congregation as a Commissioned Ruling Elder (CRE) over a two-year period .  This Biblical Interpretation course is also approved for those seeking to become a Certified Christian Educator (CCE). Yet, courses are open to all, and one does not need to be pursuing to become a CRE or CCE in order to participate. Courses aim to enhance knowledge and practical application to various ministry contexts.
