Rev. Dr. Noel Schoonmaker serves as Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. A native of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, he previously held pastorates in North Carolina and Tennessee. Noel was educated at Furman University (B.A.), Wake Forest University (M.Div.), and Vanderbilt University (M.A., Ph.D.) where his major area was Homiletics and Liturgics, his minor area was New Testament, and he wrote a dissertation entitled, “Preaching about Race: A Homiletic for Racial Reconciliation.”
Prior to teaching at Union Presbyterian Seminary, he taught courses for Vanderbilt Divinity School, Carson-Newman University, and Central Baptist Theological Seminary. He also served as Field Supervisor for the David G. Buttrick Certificate Program in Homiletic Peer Coaching at Vanderbilt and was a contributor to Learning Together to Preach: How to Become an Effective Preaching Coach, edited by John S. McClure and Allie Utley (2023).
Noel’s preaching has been featured on Day 1 and he has written articles for publications including Interpretation, Religion News Service, and Baptist News Global. He loves spending time with his wife, Dayna, and their two daughters, Maggie and Nora.
