Models of Womanist Leadership (Womanist Leadership Institute Course)

October 17 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Thursdays, October 17-November 21

Instructor: Dr. Monique Moultrie

This interdisciplinary course draws on womanist ethics, Black church studies, and other fields to explore womanist leadership focusing on Black women who utilize religion or spirituality as a basis for their social justice commitments. The course will focus on oral histories and autobiographies of various Black spiritual activists and leaders as we study the long Black Freedom struggle as experienced and initiated by Black women. In particular, we will  investigate how leader identities are formed or flattened by engagement with the “Black church” or spirituality ultimately analyzing the ways in which individuals and groups resist various forms of oppression and dominance to bring social transformation in secular spaces. Guided by the themes of womanist ethical leadership and womanist spiritual activism, this course evaluates womanist leadership practices specifically highlighting authenticity and truth-telling, justice-seeking, spirituality, and collaborative leadership. Within this course, you will hone skills and insights needed to be critically reflective of leadership models via readings, course lectures, class discussions, and media analysis.
