Islamic Studies Scholar to Lead Dawe Lecture on March 14 at Union Presbyterian Seminary
Richmond, VA (February 23, 2024)—The author of Rebellious Wives, Neglectful Husbands: Controversies in Modern Qur’anic Commentaries will lead the annual Dawe Lecture on March 14 at Union Presbyterian Seminary. The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in Watts Chapel on the Richmond campus.
Exploring the subject of women against the backdrop of broader historical, intellectual, and political developments, Dr. Hadia Mubarak teaches courses on Islam, comparative scriptures, women and gender in the Muslim world. Dr. Mubarak also leads classes on the history of Islam in America and religious representation in popular culture at Queens University in Charlotte, NC.
Mubarak received her master’s degree in Contemporary Arab Studies with a concentration in Women and Gender from Georgetown University. She received her bachelor’s degree in International Affairs and English from Florida State University. In 2004, Mubarak was the first female to be elected president of the national Muslim Students Association.
As a field researcher, Mubarak conducted on-site interviews and surveys with a range of Muslim scholars, government officials, activists, students, and journalists in Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, and India, and published an analysis of these surveys in Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization (The Brookings Institution Press, 2008).
The Dawe Lecture series is funded through The Donald and Nancy Dawe Fund for Emotional and Ethical Growth. The Fund was established thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Coleman Longan honoring Donald and Nancy Dawe. Dr. Dawe was professor emeritus of Union Presbyterian Seminary until his death in 2012.
The lecture series, which is held annually at Union Presbyterian Seminary, pays tribute to Dr. and Mrs. Dawe and promotes ethical and religious understanding. Because of Professor Dawe’s long-standing interest and commitments in the area of multi-religious and multi-cultural understanding and interfaith dialogue, this lecture series seeks to contribute a deepened awareness and insight in areas of intellectual and especially practical religious concern.
