Public Theology Forum
Saturday, September 17, 2022
Union Presbyterian Seminary’s Richmond Campus
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Open to all, the Public Theology Forum is a new and exciting event on public theology and witness, what it means and what it looks like for those in ministry. Participants will leave with practical ideas for advocacy and activism within their own contexts. Experienced practitioners (pastors, community activists, non-profit leaders, and seminary faculty) will share how they engage forms of public theology in their own community settings. A broad range of topics and issues will be covered, including social, racial, and economic justice, food equity, and theological, ecological, and climate concerns.
Each registered participant will select two (2) Workshop choices. Event registration includes lunch, followed by a panel discussion.
The panel, moderated by Dr. Samuel L. Adams, Professor of Old Testament and Director of Community Engagement at Union Presbyterian Seminary, will feature leading Richmond pastors, non-profit leaders, and professors at the seminary. Topics of discussion will include effective organizing in churches, creating change in “purple” congregations, successful lobbying with city and state governments, developing church partnerships around the globe, and confronting structural racism. Panelists will address concrete strategies as well as the witness of Scripture and Christian ethics on community organizing.
Workshop leaders and panelists will include academic scholars, theologians, and community activists.
This event is open to the public, yet registration is required. Event fee is $25 per person (includes lunch). Financial assistance will be available. To inquire about financial assistance, please contact the Program Coordinator via email by clicking here. Registration will close Friday, September 9, 12:00 p.m. ET.
