The seminary has learned with great sadness of the passing of Peggie L. Atkins, former director of foundation relations at Union Theological Seminary (now Union Presbyterian Seminary). After teaching private piano lessons for nearly 20 years, she joined Union as a part-time receptionist and quickly rose to grants guru in the development department (1982-2007), where her wit, kindness, and sage advice are still missed today. Upon her retirement in 2007, she continued in her service to the seminary on the President's Advisory Council.
"Peggie was an exceptional Christian!" adds Louis Weeks, President Emeritus of Union Presbyterian Seminary. "Both thoroughly effective professionally and thoroughly hospitable in caring for all around her -- 100 percent of both."
A life-long Methodist, Peggie was active in many capacities at Skipwith Methodist Church and later at Welborne Methodist. She was active for many years in the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs, serving as president of Monacan Junior Woman's Club and Monacan Woman's Club, as president of Lee District, VFWC, and secretary of the VFWC. A registered parliamentarian, she was president of the Minna E. Adams Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians, taught parliamentary law and served as parliamentarian for both volunteer and professional organizations.
Peggie grew up in Windsor, NC, and attended Westhampton College and the Pan American School of Business. She is survived by her spouse of 59 years, James Atkins; three children, Thomas M. Atkins, Susan Atkins (Easterling), and Lynn A. Shibut; five grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren; one brother, Paul T. Lassiter; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The entire seminary sends heart-felt condolences to the family.
The funeral will be held at Welborne United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 13, at 1 p.m., with a reception afterwards in the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Union Presbyterian Seminary, 3401 Brook Rd., Richmond, VA 23227 or Welborne United Methodist Church, 920 Maybeury Dr., Richmond, VA 23229.
